The North Fitzroy Community Gardens Group (NFCGG) is a non-profit organisation that formed in 1997 with the aim of establishing a community garden, known as Rushall Garden, on land leased from the City of Yarra.

Our Vision: To promote organic gardening as a sustainable community activity based on respect, consideration and co-operation within the whole community.

We are committed to maintaining an attractive urban space where people can grow plants predominantly for food, and which is accessible to the local community.

We are committed to promoting sustainable practices amongst garden members and the wider local community through the provision of a range of activities and facilities such as community composting.

We strive to enhance the sustainability of the community through the provision of communal gardening areas, projects and activities as well as the allocation of individual plots, preference for which is given to residents of the City of Yarra, in particular to residents in public housing and those without access to adequate space for growing vegetables.

We seek to foster the sharing and development of a diversity of gardening skills and organic practices. Accordingly, herbicides (weed killers) are strictly prohibited. For a list of disease and pest control products approved by the Committee, click here.

We respect and acknowledge the prior ownership of the land by Indigenous Australians through the inclusion of native plants in the communal areas of the garden.

We endeavour to manage the garden by consensus in an open, participatory and non-discriminatory manner through the yearly election of a management committee drawn from amongst members.

In the implementation and promotion of these policies, a set of procedures guides the NFCGG Committee of Management on the roles, responsibilities and procedures to be followed by office bearers and other committee members.

The policies are also put into practice by all members who have developed an agreed set of Garden By-Laws to guide the way members, as gardeners, work together. Our current By-Laws and associated Code of Conduct are available here.

Responsibilities of the Committee and individual plot holders are also specified in the City of Yarra Licence Agreement and NFCGG Sub-License Agreement for Rushall Garden Plot Holders.

Health and Safety Guidelines are now available, and all members should familiarise themselves with them.

The NFCGG is an incorporated association under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981. To view the Rules of Association, click here
